After a diffuse excision of an osteosarcoma in his left thigh, his artificial joint became loose, and a knee rotationplasty was performed in April 1992 to restore function. After the surgery, the transition of function acquisition in physical therapy was retrospectively investigated for four years, from 1992 to 1996. The range of joint movement of the affected limb had reached almost normal range 20 weeks after surgery, but he needed 20 months to recover enough muscle strength around the hip joint. He started walking independently 14 months after surgery, but about two years was needed for the bone adhesion to solidify. During this time, a knee-ankle-foot orthosis with an ischium support was used. After the bone adhesion was complete, weight bearing was allowed only on the sole, and the knee joint could be moved from -5° of extension to 90° of flexion. At the last follow-up, his was participating in sport activities, and he was able to perform higher functions than he did after the excision surgery.
