As far as the hero's childhood and his hometown Nimikon, from which he departs, are concerned, this novel does not always trace directly Hesse's own experiences. The rural scene of Nimikon surrounded by Alpine nature, however, reflects German farm villages which saw a wave of industrialization around the turn of the century, and the description of Peter hides the dilemmas the author lived out.
