This investigation will make clear Baudelaire's theory of esthetics, \"modernity\", which, as an art critic, he was quick to bring forward based on his view of civilization. It will also reveal that the title Les Limbes represents much better the subject of Les Fleurs du Mal, the rococo title of which is apt to be interpreted within the narrow framework of Christianity. Secondly, we compare the first edition with the second (definitive) edition (1861). It took Baudelaire sixteen years to publish the latter after he notified the public of his forthcoming collection of poems Les Lesbiennes. These years were the revolutionary and formative period of modem society. Therefore, the second edition includes many elements which characterize our modem society.
