内容記述 | Natsume Soseki is the greatest and most popular novelist of modern Japan. He published his first novel Wagahai wa neko de aru in 1905. Soseki described this work as a humorous novel. In this paper, I have tried to analyse his humor and rhetoric. To this end, I have pointed out his new and original compounds, such as kakisemei (oyster-teacher), gokurakushugi (paradise-ism) and so on. These compounds cause us amusement. Soseki uses the style of ordinary conversation and strings many words together, as in the following example : "shafu, batei, buraikan, gorotsuki-shosei, hiyatoi-babaa, samba, yoba, anma, tonma ni itaru made" ("from start to finish a rickshaw-man, stableman, rogue, hooligan-scholar, old charwoman, midwife, witch, massagist, ass"). This pattern of expression is typical of his writing. Soseki displays striking originality in his similes and metaphors. | |||||||
