| 内容記述 | Malaysia is an example of a pluralistic society. This report is an attempt to trace the process of its formation from the viewpoint of historical demography. The cases of Selangor and Perak are described and analyzed in this report. These two states were incorporated in the Federated Malay States, which were heavily influenced by the development policy of the British colonial government. Immigration by Chinese and Indians was an important feature. Figures obtained from the census taken every ten years neslect subtle fluctuations, while the estimated population printed in the annual reports sometimes does not represent reality because of the simplistic method of estimation. Descriptions and statistics which appeared in the annual reports for these states published from the late nineteenth century were carefully documented. Immigration figures and vital statistics are combined with the impression of contemporary colonial officials to show a dynamic and more or less fluctuating population change in the period 1885-1939. | |||||||
